A TRAINSPOTTER is being paid up to $1300 a week to watch a weed-infested rail line that has not been used for more than a decade.

The flagsman will be at rail line in Warrnambool, in Victoria, for three months while sewer lines are put in nearby even though the track has been blockaded by rocks and sleepers for two months.

Wannon Water, which is building the sewer lines, said before they could begin work, public train operator V/Line forced it to have a flagsman on guard despite no trains using the lines.

Over the last week or so I've been able to spend some time eating and drinking from some of the "best" eating places in Sydney and I have come to the conclusion that food is overated. Now don't get me wrong, it's not that I don't like food or I can't tell good from bad. It's just that I think that food is way overated. For example you could get an expensive meal for $150+ per head or a reasonable healthy meal for $10. Is the expensive meal 15 times better? I think not.

This week I got to drink Campos coffee. often considered the best in Sydney. Was it good? Sure but was it THAT good? I don't know. I drink coffee from a lot of places and I really do enjoy my coffee. But the difference between Campos and other good coffee? Not that much.

Universities are different these days. Once upon a time they were the place where one sort to find the truth. The one Truth.

But now things are so different. Recently the university formerly known as Central Queensland University (aka CQU) has "rebranded" itself. Interestingly enough one of the things it has done is change its logo/coat of arms. Gone is the "conventional" coat of arms to be replaced with this bluey greeny wierd looking shield. According to the Vice Chancellor it was changed because the old one was too complex with too many colours. But the new one? What does that say? We are blue and green and we can't draw our shield straight.

I don't blame CQU for trying to change things. Over the last year their revenue has dropped by millions leaving them with a deficit. Revenue next year is not expected to be spectaculor so rebranding might be an idea that could work. Having said that the question of why a University has chosed to rebrand in such a way also opens up questions. For example according to the Vice Chancellor CQU has lost millions of dollars not because of damage to a University from a hunger strike (caused by students protesting against the Uni's quality) but because of a change in the PR laws. Which makes me wonder why is a university derving so much of its income from PR degrees? Perhaps its because Federal funding over the last decade has fallen so much that the only way to survive as a university is to get money from Overseas students and in order to do that, give them what they want. A degree that leads to PR. So much for One truth, so much for Education. Perhaps we should just be selling residency + skills degrees.

Driver is driving a little faster than the speed limit, sees a flashing light saying "slow down" or sees a clearly marked speed camera so they slow down, ensuring that they do not hit any kid who decides for some strange reason (contrary to everything they have be taught by parents and school) to run across the road.

Alternatively, following the governments great "safety" plan. There is no flashing lights, no great warning just a highly "visible" speed camera. So driver keeps driving at the same speed and this time may hit the kid running across the road . But NEVER FEAR that driver will get a great speeding fine THREE weeks later. By that time he may have driven through at that speed some 15-20 times.

Brought back so many memories of the times I would drive out there. Driving 1.5 hours (round trip) in the wrong direction. The look on Michelle's face when I told her - " u like driving that much?" hehe People must think I do...well I do like driving..really like driving but I guess people still don't realise that I don't drive 45 minutes in the wrong direction just because I like driving (unless you live on Slade Road or down near Bulli Pass) but I drive coz I want to catch up with you - talk to u etc.... :-)

TENS of thousands of Chinese tourists to Australia are being fleeced by rip-off travel companies and rogue traders every year, consumer groups have warned.

The situation is so bad that tourist industry officials fear Australia could be damaged as a brand and the massive economic benefits of the boom in travel from China could disappear.

Scams uncovered in Sydney include:

* Charging tourists $100 to walk on Bondi Beach or to have their photograph taken at the Opera House;

* Locking tourists in shops and confiscating passports until they spend big on overpriced goods;

* Unfulfilled promises of luxury central business district accommodation;

* Travellers crammed into minibuses and denied free time for their own shopping and sightseeing.

Choice consumer group spokeswoman Indira Naidoo said: "A few years ago it was the Japanese who were being ripped off but now it is the Chinese. They are perfect victims; they are not used to international travel and can be quite naive, and many of them have little or no English, so if someone tells them that a sign on the beach says it costs $100 to walk on it, then they will believe them.

"Culturally, also, the Chinese are reluctant to create a fuss and complain so they will go along with what they are being told.

"We are already receiving thousands of complaints every year from Chinese tourists who are unhappy and we think that is the tip of the iceberg.

"We estimate that only about 10 per cent of those who are unhappy actually make a complaint, so in reality, tens of thousands of tourists are being ripped off."

China is Australia's fastest-growing inbound tourism market and annual numbers have soared by 280percent to more than 300,000 in the past seven years, making it the fifth biggest in terms of visitors and economic benefit. By 2015, almost 1million Chinese visitors are expected to visit Australia each year.

The recent increase comes despite a survey of Chinese visitors by the Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources that found 40percent were dissatisfied with their experiences here.

Both Choice and the Australian Tourism Export Council (ATEC) have received reports of tourists being held under virtual detention from the moment they arrive in Australia, with no free time.

Some are bussed directly from the airport to suburban warehouses which they are told are duty-free shops. "They are told they can't shop in normal shops in Sydney because Australians don't like the Chinese or the goods are overpriced," Ms Naidoo said.

"We have had anecdotal reports of people being locked in a shop and their passports taken off them until they have spent a certain amount on very shoddy goods."

The Federal Government has tightened the rules so tour operators that do not give tourists free time and unsupervised shopping can be banned.

But legitimate travel companies say the Government it is not doing enough to banish rogue operators.

I guess another thing has hit me is the idea to get back to basics. Basics in

* Teaching
* Prayer
* Bible reading

I means its easy to get all complex in how many different ways to teach and the complexities, its is easy to get trapped in talking too much about the bible and not reading it (or following it for that matter) But there is nothing like the basics and the fundamentals.....You may be the dancer but He is the Lord of the dance. You can theorise for hours on the "how" but tis so much better to just stick to the basics and then just "do"

Guess it's been a while since i have blogged. So many things I could say but if I wrote them all down I could be here for a looong time....(might be doing posts the same length as one tall Singaporean :-p)

Spiritually and Theologically I have been learning or reminded of so many things over the last few months. Two things that stand out are

1) Although we often think of a Non Christian coming to a "fork in the road" when they here the gospel - two paths; one to heaven following Jesus and one t hell - its not really correct. They are already on the road to hell and unless they change they will be in Hell. Actually I prefer Jonathan Edwards analogy. It's more like we are being held over the fiery pit of hell and we could drop in any moment (through death). But it is only God's Grace and Mercy...like a spiders web that holds us from falling.

2) Have you fallen in love with the church? Jesus has :-) Having finished Josh Harris' book on dating the church I am reminded again of Christ's love for the church and how we are to do the same. I guess with changing churches and stuff I get the feeling that there are many at church who are there to fulfull their own needs. Doing stuff when it is convienient. Coming from a church group wher you kinda live, breath church things or things about fellow Christians I found this strange ...having said that I think recently i may have slipped into a little of this "convienince" thing..Love the Church - Jesus Does :-)

More than 2 million Sydney residents participated in Earth Hour on Saturday night by flicking the switch, turning appliances off stand-by and enjoying an hour of quiet darkness, according to our poll results.

It's very rare that I rave on about food. But today I am making an exception. I have these "chips" and I need to know what the heck they are. They look like normal potato chips that have no salt, they taste a little like potato chips cooked in different oil. Maybe peanut oil?? But here's the catch. They aren't made out of potatos....they are made out of MUSHROOMS!!!! (or maybe some other kind of fungi). Anyway I have beentold they only come out at Chinese New Year time and they arent sold anywhere in Australia. Discipline Needed

Recently I have been reading a book about the disciplines of a Godly man. More and More I can see how important discipline is. Especially in light of what I see in the near future. My cuz sent me an email asking me how I was going on some decisions I made earlier. Figuratively speaking I looked up and saw the next two months. 150% full time teaching load. 2 University subjects, 1 training in ministry course and one large consulting job. oh boy..... Moreover, so many opportunities around the gospel....priorities and prayer needed. Real disicpline to get so many things done. I know I can. I remember in the early days doing 35+ seperate tasks a week outside of work. This time however I truly believe I have some more effective time management techniques and really want to use this next couple of months to Grow in God and also be used by him to share the gospel.

Chinese New Year - Attack Plan

Today was pretty good. Actually seemed like a day of planning. Following the morning at work I popped back into Holmes to have a good chat to Bruce one of my unofficial mentors. Having done that I thought I would do some things for the future. First stop...try and find a ESV Bible in large print (for the blind person :-p) Couldn't find one at the bible society and as I thought they are very difficult to find. (Seems like the NASB in large print isnt much easier to find) . Hmm anybody out there know where to find a ESV in large print

Next stop was College. TEG college where I will be teaching for the bulk of the year. Planning out four subjects in the row is hard. Especially since some of those subjects/terms I will be teaching for 30 hours a week. Sounds crazy..is crazy... but when i think about it Two small classes @ 15 hours a week is better than one large class at 15 hours. Following college I headed back over to St Andrews for TIM ( Training in Ministry) which was really good. A chance to train, plan and pray about evangelistic opportunities.

Final step for the day? Planning out the Evangelistic event for Lunar new Year - 18th Feb. Should be good :-) Check out Danny with the "attack plan" above

The words speak pretty clearly huh? Why in the world would you have play with mud when you have a perfectly good holiday by the beach offered to you? The worlds sounded even more funny given that we had just spent the afternoon playing at the beach.

SPent the weekend with some guys and gals from ABC at Jervis Bay and it was awesome. The conversations, the games and just getting to know people better :-) In the nights we listened to some sermons by John Piper and heard that quote above. He was talking of how we desire to little. We don't desire God as much as we should. Instead we settle for something so much less (ie the mud pies) when something so much better is on offer.

Well I think thats what one of the signs on the stairs says. I started working this week at a new place and I must admit it is wierd. Firstly the lift in the building doenst work. So every morning it's 122 steps to the front door of the school. It's not really what you want at 8 am in the morning when your half asleep (yes I usually arive at school and then wake up after i've been in the class for about 5 minutes). Secondly where I am used to having too many students (like 140 students in a class built for 40 and no microphone> I now have.....4 students. And 4 good students for that matter too.

Still it feel so wierd to be back. It's also amazingly tiring. I forgot that teaching can be so tiring. I mean when I get into the groove I can teach lots of hours and do it passionately as well...but when I haven't really taught for two months...I certainly feel it.

Outside of Work. I see big choices looming. With Church and other activities.... lots of things to think about. Can't say I'm too much closer to a decision. But I feel I'm getting more and more prepared to make the right decisions.....

Joys of Being made Redundant

I remember being made redundant at work over a year ago. It was something I really enjoyed. Something I almost asked for. My job was boring and basically none existant. I wanted to move on to other things and the payout from my job would be significant.

Over the last year I've been struggling with changes at my church. Changes in my role that in many ways might seem like becoming redundant. Other people who I used to lead are now able to do my job and now I feel lost. What am I to do? There are other need yes but I don't know how or what to do. In many ways I feel I can't do anything.

Perhaps there are, perhaps there aren't. I've been really struggling with it. Until I was reminded by somebody that being made "redundant" is actually something I've been praying for. I was reminded how many years ago I was praying that these guys would be able to lead people to Christ. Something I can really rejoice and thank God for.

To all you guys over the years and to those I still have the privellege of travelling together with. I'm proud of you guys. Keep at it :-)

Wierd Service Staff

Must have been the day of the wierd waitress yesterday. I had morning tea at Michelle's Patiserie yesterday. Ordered a Coffee and a slice of cake. The coffee was ok but the slice of cake was served with a knife (no fork or spoon)

Then for dinner went to a Japanese resteraunt. My friend ordered some tea. Took the top of the pot and looked in. The waitress comes and says "yes you get a refill....yeah I know they are pretty stingy" (nobody at our table had said anything to prompt this statement. Then when my friend answered "No we werent concerned with that" she said "oh yeah the tea might look like sewerage or something but yeah its tea"

I spent last week at CMS summer school listening to great bible teaching from William Taylor and to many missionaries share about their lives on the field. It was both challenging and exciting as I was reminded once again of the importance of prayer and he nature of ministry. It is interesting that when Jesus points out the need forpeople to do more "work" he does not say to his disciples "Go out and get working" but he says "Pray to the Lord of the harvest for more Labourers".It really is a reflection on how thingsin God's Kingdom really work

New years

Blog Blog Blog. Three blog entries to type up. So much to say. But knowing me, what actually ends up on the blog is less than a tenth of my thoughts on the subject. New years saw me at the Collaroy Conference centre for the 14th Christian Conference on Service. The conference was filled with about 500 people that where approximately 50% local and 50% from overseas. The talks were pretty good and quite challenging. In fact if your interested in finding out more you can download them here

For me the conference had two highlights. The first was being able to spend some time with a small group of singaporeans who had come over. Whilst they wouldnt have known it, just being around them reminded me again of what it was like to lead youth. Although it's been under a year since I have ttopped leading youth in a formal way and I do miss it.

The other thing I was challenged about was in regard to giving up one's life for God. I'm still struggling with this challenge. Struggling to really give in. But it really is an important thing huh?

Are you ready for Divine Appointments this Christmas?

If we look positively at Christmas, despite what it has become in the West, we will be more effective. Here are some suggestions:

-Pray in advance for the people you will be seeing this Christmas who you don't normally see. This is a rare opportunity. Without changing who you are, seek to be Christ to these people. Perhaps, like me, you don't care enough for some of these people, or maybe don't even like some of them. Maybe Great Aunt Patty gets on your nerves. ... Pray in advance! :)

-Use discussions about Christmas to talk about Christ. Look out for them. Don't miss them.

-Enjoy your Christmas. Have fun! Have a good attitude. Take joy in how kids love Christmas. Make the Christmas of those around you brighter.

-Beware too-high expectations when it comes to gifts and people making much of you. Don't expect much in the way of gifts, or you may be disappointed and experience a Christmas of self-pity. Don't let it happen. Be others-oriented, and you will have a better Christmas.

-Think about watching "The Nativity" in a theatre. I am planning to do this, and know people who have seen it who really liked it. (Let me know if you've seen it, and what you think.)

-Remember those who get forgotten at Christmas. Christmas is one of the happiest times of year for some, and one of the saddest times of year for others. Remember especially those who are away from family or who recently lost a loved one.

-Don't be small-minded. Don't waste too much time complaining about how people say "Season's Greeetings" instead of "Merry Christmas." I recently had to endure a whole sermon of this. If your view of the eternal revolution that is Christianity is to whine about little things like this, you (as is too often true of me) have forgotten that we have much bigger things to talk about. Life is short, and people need Christ, and He's asked us to take Him to them.

AFter a really interesting documentary on the new Russia, I watched a documentary called Decadence on SBS. It's really interesting. They state that 70% of Australians don't think they can afford everything they need and that includes those earnin over $70,000 a year. "We work to spend until we die"... we work harder and spend more yet here is a really interesting question..do we live more.....perhaps we actually live less

I could probably blog about so many things at the moment. About the interesting concepts of tithing that I have heard,(ie it wasnt giving 10% to church but a feast once every three years), About the documentary China Blue which documents how thequest for profits and cheap merchandise in rich western countries actually affects some of the chinese workers who have to make their garments but I think I will blog about the need for Christians to "hold the line".

It's an interesting, the call to compromise one's faith in what one does. The call of the "lesser call" as on person once put it. It's funny but true Christianity often seems impractical. Like it may sound all well and good to "love your neighbour" to be a good worker and husband/wife/father/mother or child. But isn't a good Christian an environmentalist, a humanitarian and stuff like that as well. What about helping the poor? When you think about these things its easy to say "ahh stuff it". But the call to compromise is not just in these places..it's everywhere.

Yet as Christians the call is very clear. The call to compromise. The call not to worship idols...the call to take up one's cross and to follow.....

Challenging Teaching

It's been awhile since I have felt so gutted after teaching class. reminds me of the days I did 20 hours straight over three days. Or the times when I was teaching my first English classes. I was thinking yesterday that this month is a real challenge. I mean teaching a subject which is not my area and teaching it at a pretty high level too. Every day I'mgoing home and having to learn what I am going to teach and then take a guess at how to teach it too :-p But yeah it's a challenge. Something that in some ways I enjoy. I mean I'm certainly not the best teahcer of this area...but in one regard I'm the only teacher (available). But I want to do right by the kids. Teach them the best so that they can learn the most.

It was a really great learning experience and really encouraging for me to see someone so faithful to God despite all the difficulties that he does encounter. I have met many people who claim to be people with a scientific mind that say "God is just not scientific. If you are a truely a rational scientific person you cannot believe in God". I think its such a funny statement as so many of the great scientists of time were all Christians. Today I learnt that Dr Francis Collins director of the Human Genome Project is a stong practicing Christian. Read some of his comments here

Of Beer and other things

And so the day ended at the Red Oak Beer Cafe. It's a really nice place and a god place to cap off a good day. It started badly with one of my students calling me up to say she had problems with her college and due to her visas she couldnt get to UNSW as she wanted. It reallyg ot me angry especially as i knew the college she is currently at an they really should have let her go to Uni. After trying to sort out the best "next step for her" I went to my College at the ATN just to drop in and do the usual admin stuff before heading over to Cathedral Bible Foum. Al Stewart was talking on the parable of the Mina's and how there are only two kinds of people. Those who acknowledge the king and will work for him those who don't acknowlede the king and either openly rebel or do nothing...those who rebel (openly or other) will be judged. After this Iw ent back to Holmes and hung around with teachers and students just chatting about life and stuff followed by a few beers with the boys at the Red Oak BEer Cafe. Excellent Brew!!!

Give everything to Christ

Been a pretty good Sunday. Blaze was really good as there was a guess speaker. The speaker was the principal of Pacific Hills high and he spoke about how important it is to love God with all your heart , mind and soul and to use your gifts for Jesus. He spoke of countless young students who had given their life to Jesus and were committed to using thier gifts for God. He spoke of how many of these students were now serving God in so many ways and in so many places.

As he was speaking it reminded me so much about my own life and that I am called to put God first in everything. It was specifically relevant because I noticed that in the last few weeks I have been seeking career advancements a s a primary thing but forgetting that my Gifts will only count if used for God not for personal gain.

Tonight @ ABC the talk was really good. Again about how important it is to follow the model of the Thessalonian Church and how we too should be a model for others to follow. Dinner was at a Uyghur resteraunt. It was really cool. Just like the talk earlier in the afternoon it once again got me excited about missions and going o/s and stuff

It's a lonely place - Sydney

Last day at College and as I sat having lunch with another student I was reminded once again that in such a big city with so many great things there are so many lonely people. People who come to Sydney thinking that everybody here will want to become their best friend and that everybody is "white" and rides on Kangaroos only to find out that it's a big city with millions of people all busy doing their work. People come, people go. All rushing to work, to school, to do their daily chores hardly stopping to get to know people. It's really hard as an overseas student, especially those who are not in the big universiies where they have lots of social events and clubs to join. It's even harder when you don't speak that much English. Local Australians may find it hard to communicate with you and the only people you feel comfortable hanging around with are people from you home country. So you hang out with them and you never really get to know Australia. Instead for you it's a lonely place. Not many friends.

I wish I could help to fill this gap, to show these students that we Aussies do care and moreover there is a God who cares more about them and loves them than anyone else in the world could....

Last days at Holmes

With one day left at Holmes I look back at my times at college. There have been times of absolute frustration yet in the last days I can see all the things I love about the college. The staff (in general) are great and there are some really cool students. I think thats something I am definitely going to miss, the interaction with the students. But still I have made many friends and some I hope will carry on pass my departure.

Anyway tomorrow is my last day so will see how it will go :-)

It's only taken me close to a year to actually do itm but i have finally moved into my new place. Had Andy Cheng and Chen come to help me out. So it was Cheng, Cheng and well..Cheng...all moving. Now that I am in my new place I must say I like it. Aside from the fact that you can hear a lot of things (like the front door of the building) it is avery homey place and i really like it. I think the thing I really like most is my one "luxury item". That is a illuminated globe of the earth. It's so cool looking at it and just thinking about all the different places and people in the world. Makes one want to pray for all the people in the world....which incidentally is something i want my place to be. A place where people can pray.

Well's it's another long dayu and I'm supposed to be studying. Something I'm really stuggling with. I guess it's the usual October/November thing. I get around this time every year when I am studying..or should I say trying not to study. I guess it's coz at this time of the year it's getting to the end of the School year and I am getting tired. Still only a month or so to go before Summer Holidays!!!

Last night was mid autumn celebration @ ABC. There was lot's of food that you would expect for a Mid autumn festival. Rice, Moon cakes, Korean Mid autumn cakes, Pizza....hmm Don't know where Pizza came from But still it was all good! Andrew gave a talk on love and God's love so great that he would give his own son as an atoning sacrifice. Although I have probrably heard it a few hundred time his point amazes me. We would do everything we can to save our children from death. We would die ttrying to protect them. But here is God willing to send his own Son to die for us. People who didn't even love him!!...Wow God's love is BIG huh?

ABC

The last few weeks at ABC have been pretty good and yesterday was no exception. Last couple of talks by Andrew have been really interesting. I can't say I remember every detail about the sermon but each week something hits me. Last week it wsa when he was talking about building where nobody has built before. How thats what Paul wanted to do and it made me think of how cool it would be to work with an unreached people group that nobody had ever shared the gospel. This week it was from Psalm. How majestic is God. I think the illustration about God choosing Jesus was really interesting. It also got me to thinking how God chose to save us. Pretty amazing stuff :-)

After church we went to dinner at some Japanese place and then after lots of fun trying to get an order in at the French Riveria we ended up at Brave (Crows Nest) for icecream. One of the things that struck me again as I was speaking to Wil is how friendly people at ABC is and that there doesn't seem to be any "in" group. The whole atmosphere is friendly which is really important. Jasmine said the one thing that got her was that even newcomers would be welcoming newcomers. That's a GOOD thing :-)

Anywayz got to write a whole essay/major project on one day. Not a good thing so I better get back to work

Last two months

It's been a good two months since my last blog. Oh how so many things have happened!!! From a physical/practical perspective there are probrably three main differences in the last two months

1) I completed a short but interesting one month teaching contract at a new college
2) I got the keys to my apartment and I'm slowly starting to move things and
3) I went to another church meeting for a couple of weeks

Throughout thesse events (and other things) I think there has been a major change in my mindset on work on life and on God. More and more so I find myself just enjoying time with God. I think that song "None like you" which I have been hearing recently really spells it out. "I could search for all eternity long and find that there is none Like you". There really is none like Jesus and there is no greater joy than knowing Jesus and being able to spend time with him. Knowing that Jesus has paid the price in dying for my sins is both aweful and wonderful. It is "aweful" (that is full of awe - how can my God die for me?) and totally wonderful as well. One side it has reminded me not to take Jesus and his love for granted and on anotehr it has allowed be to thoroughly enjoy life with Him.

Knowing this, all of life starts to change. My attidude to teaching has changed. I still want to inspire and teach these young minds to be succesful and go well, but now there is not just care but Love behind it. Christ's love. Something I want to grow more and more in my teaching. In terms of my church and meeting more and more so I am now interested in where I can serve God best, how I can be involved in just sharing his love. There are so many people who need Jesus. So much need. Oh the honour of just being able to be involved in the calling of people to Jesus :-)

The Spiritual Lessons of Running 1

Been Reading one of my favourite books "The Pilgrim's Progress" for the last few weeks and also started running again. I was reminded how Paul speaks of Running the Race in Hebrews 12 and Phillipians 3 (as well as other places) and as I was running I realised that this analogy is so good. So inlight of that I thought over the next few weeks I would detail things I have learnt from running.

1) Running fast is good. But if you run fast you may not go very far very fast. One day when I was running I decided I would run as fast as I could and so I did a lap of a running track about 25% faster then my normal speed. I was so puffed out at the end of it that I had to spend half an hour recovering. Overall (adding the extra 30 minutes) I could have walked the same distance two or three times in the same time I took to sprint it and rest. So too in our spiritual lives. It is better to be constantly growing rather than do "tarzan living" where we go from spiritual high to spiritual bust back to spiritual high. Consistancy is much better

2) It doesnt take much unhealthy living to slow you down. Today after a week's rest. I decided to go for another record long run. Yesterday I had a large dinner. Today I had a big lunch and so I thought I would work really hard and go for a long run. Well I managed about 35% of what I intended before stopping and I was bitterly disappointed. It doesnt take too much junk food and long nights to stop you running well. So to in our spiritual life. A few stuff ups or lax moments and it sets us back quite a way

Been listening to Petra farewell, the last album ever for Petra made in 2005. I have to say that these guys would probrably have to be the best all time Christian Rock band of all time. 33 Years after they first began with what could be now termed as "gentle rock" through all the various styles their music still has such great impact. Preaching the good news to those who might not normally feel comfortable in the "whiteyville" styled church. Thanx Petra and Thank you God for using them :-)

Illawarra Missions Night

With the end of my Cross Cultural Management Exam, I said "goodbye" to exams for this semester and dashed out to the car to get home wondering why the exam rules state that there are no toys or lucky charms allowed in the exam room (Teddy would be so sad hehe).

Friday Night this week I went down to the gong with one of the International team Mobilisers for an Illawarra Missions Day. It was pretty good. Kinda like the big reachout conference on a mini scale. I really enjoyed the opprotunity to go. It gave me an opprotunity to learn more about missions, learn more about some of the questions that people might ask and how to be sensitive to peoples thoughts. Thats not to say I know how to do it or I am an expert in it, but I was glad to be able to go and hear what the youth of the gong are thinking and hopefully have been able to answer a few of their questions satisfactorily. I was also able to meet up with Shane a former class mate from High School who I haven't seen for over ten years and is now one of the youth leaders at Albion Park Uniting and John V who sometimes comes to talk up at CAOS. Was good to talk to them and some of the kids and I look forward to doing it again sometime

Cheating and Bible College

Been a pretty interesting week last week. Met Y2k on Thurdsday back from a stint in the States studying Theology at Bible College. We got to talking about students and students cheating. He made mention that just as students cheat in Other schools some may attempt to cheapt in Bible college. Preally silly huh? Doesn't it defeat the point? And as many Bible College critizisers might say "Hah!! That shows you why Bible college doesnt help you! You need to be taught bu God himself!!". But as I thought and discussed a couple of things hit me.

1) In some cultures what we call cheating they call helping people and for some people it is difficult. They see their friends struggling in a test and instinctively they try to help. Where I may have once thought this was a not a plausable reason; having now taught in a secular college for a year I can see how some students not educated in AUstralia or the States might see things this way.

2) For the majority of students who know that they are cheating it occurred to me. At a bible college you have a bunch of Christians and these students are representative of any bunch of Christians. Put 100 Christians in a room and chances are some of them will steal, some of them will cheat, some of them will do bad things. Now honestly I would hope that the number of "some" will be extremely low. But when you get a large number of christians to think that some of them won't fall and end up doing dodgy things is niaeve

Well lots of good things they tell me. It's Australia's largest city, its the financial capital of the Oceanic region and the captial of the State. (although some may think its the capital of the country for some reason). But here are a few other facts:

- Its the capital of staunch good conservative Christian Teaching where evangelicals actually preach the Bible
- It's the Christian capital of the region with Australia's biggest church Hillsong (Hills CLC) situated in Sydney's own bible belt

But here are some other interesing and perhaps not so great facts

- It's also the gay capital of the region with the second largest population of gays in the world
- Neighbouring sister city of Wollongong is known as tge witches capital of the region although some woul say.
- Another neighgbouring town of Katoomba which is home of the States New Age community is the witches capital. ( Ironically Katoomba is also home tothe KAtoomba Christian Convention which is probrbaly the second largest Christian Convention in Sydney

Met with Dave over at M28 today. We got to discussing what M28 is about and I reckon its a excellent idea. Even when we are at home on the telephone we can now contribute to the great commission set down in the Bible. How? Well over there at M28 they have partnered with mainstream with internet Providers and telephone providers to give you reliable services. BUT instead of giving your money to them you give it to M28 who then put the profits to support missions and Missionaries.

Is it really really cheap? Well no it isn't. It's not about providing super cheap Services. It is contributing to the Great Commission whilst doing your every day normal thing of using the internet or telephone.

Dear Lord: thank you for being accessible through prayer. Thank you for being able to listen to the prayers of millions of people at the same time, as you did on the Global Day of Prayer on Sunday. Father, as your Word says in 2 Chronicles 4:17, and as millions prayed on Sunday, "forgive our sin and heal our land." Do that in my life, Lord. Help me to increasingly reject evil and to yearn for righteousness. Make me meek, humble and gentle. Give me a sense of urgency and peace that passes understanding at the same time. Help me not to be in so much of a hurry that I miss divine moments and opportunities. Give me times of being still and knowing that you are God, while connecting me with the reality of the needs around me, and the needs that are far away. Then show me my role and give me the courage to step out and obey and keep going. Father, bring me to a place where I yearn and long for you more than anything else, where prayer and communion and fellowship with your Spirit is truly my passion and life. Amen.

Well so my exam said. How do Morgans Metaphors create new possibilities. Good question..no idea. Don't really they give you too many new possibilites. Interesting day today. Left uni talkin to James about International Teams Summer Teams for 07. Even though I can't go (unless something drastic changes) I am really lookin forward to seeing other people go and have their lives touched by God.

Other than that, pretty quiet nite. Uploaded some notes, read up on the Chinese Univesities and how there push to churn out thousands of PHD research papers may be compromising their quality of education and now researching TV tuner cards for the computer.

Also listened to reflections on FM103.2 John Dickson is doing a great job carving up the Da Vinci Code. I remember reading some of the stuff that Dan Brown based his stuff up and debating with a person over the validity of the claims for some months pouring through both logical and historical arguments. Its funny the more I hear about Dan the more stupid his claims about facts are. Hes claims are soooo full of holes that historians probrably don't laugh at it because its beyong laughable. It's so bad one would cry over how somebody could get things soooo wrong

Independance

Strange isn't it? But oh so true. The Kingdom of God is often topsy turvey. Totally opposite to what the rest of the world thinks. It seems crazy that the stronger a Christian becomes the more dependance they become. More dependant on God. Less Independant. Less " I can do it" more " I can do it through Christ who strengthens me"

Vindication of Wrongs

Had an interesting chat with Colin. We got onto to discussing false accusations and wrongs and what to do when these happen. What do you do when you are falsely accused. What do you do when people see certain things you are involved in or that you do and read different intentions to your actions? Do you defend yourself? Do you stay silent?

Its an interesting question. My gut instinct is to defend oneself. To rectify any misunderstanding but I am starting to realise that this may not always be possible. Sometimes people will believe what they will believe and defending oneself actually makes thing worse. People think "ahh you see they are guilty and just trying to hide it!". I think its one of the hardest things to be falsely accused and not be able to defend yourself (such that it may make a difference). But during our conversations I was reminded of both David and Moses. Both of them were falsely accused by their followers or by Saul. Did they deserve such accusations? NO. Did they deserve persuections? No. Did they fight back when they had the chance? Not at all. They just got down on their knees and gave it to God and let God do the fighting for them. A lesson worth learning

Workplace Choices : Being Fired for Smiling

The latest Australian laws that allow a employer with less than 100 employees to fire any staff member for any reason have created much controversy lately. I can see both sides to the debate. As a business person who has been wroking in business for the last ten years and now teach it I can understand the difficulties many employers have. When you hire a bad staff member in teh past it was extremely difficult to terminat etheir employment. YOu had to give them a written warning at least three times which they needed to agree to. Many times staff would not agree that they had dones something wrong or they would claim that the employer was bullying them. In the end it was very difficult and many employers basically paid their staff to leave. As a Christian, one part of me screams out at the way many employers are now using the law. They can fire people who are too expensive, fire people because thye don't like the way the look, fire them because there is a better looking person who may take the job. Last week the story was told in the paper of an employee who was fired for smirking during a meeting.!!! Then when he was fired two other employees decided to defend the first employee ...and what happened they got fired too!!! Crazy huh?

There really needs to be a balance between the current laws and the old laws. I have met many people who are bad employees. They just create trouble and thye just want to be paid out by their employers. They will lie, cheat , steal aoand do anything for thier own benefit. Having said that there are many companies and employers who also don't care about their employees. As soon as they see a better alternqative or if they don't like you just because you are you they will get rid of you. How do we balance these twol extremes?

Not much Doing

Woke up this morning and for the first time in a couple of weeks was actually ready for my Monday morning class having done all my required readings. Also found out that somebody else had been doing their work. During the Tute Aiko pulls out 10, 11, 12..goodness 20 odd references for our assignment. All books and journals highlighted and key quotes referenced on another piece of paper!!! On one side it makes things heaps easier, on another I somehow have to cut all those references down and add discussion and do it all in about 1400 words!. Still its a great start :-)

This afternoon/evening was pretty quiet. Watched another episode of Lost and read a very interesting article on Love on Nigel Barham's website which you should check out if you have time. Finally I spent about 30 minutes late tonight walking around Oatley looking for a church where I could give away my clothes. I looked at a couple of areas in my room and pulled about 3 bags full of clothes I don't wear ( I am sure I could find another 3 or 4 easily) then walked around late at night looking for a clothing bin in Oatley to put them in. Couldn't find any :-(

Anywayz tomorrow I'm back to teaching for the new block. Tourism and Hospitality students. Should be interesting....

Blaze Teenz Camp 06

Camp this year was good. It was the first time that CAOS ran a camp specifically for Teens and specifically designed that anybody who wasn't a Christian or was unchurched would feel comfortable. The theme of the camp was on relationships and friendships with the most of the first night spent getting to know people through games and chatting around a campfire. The second day continued with games of volleyball, charades, an adapted version of stuck in the mud and activities such as horse riding, archery and canoeing. On the Third day following some good music and a skit by some of the younger girls, our speaker John Vidler took us through some activities to understand a little more about who we are, the relationships we are involved in and communication. He then told us of relationships and friendships that he had when he was younger followed by the most important relationship. That of relationship with Jesus. He told us of how relationships need to RELATE.

He spoke of how these things were perfect in a relationship with Jesus and more importantly how relationship with God was all satisfying and all fulfilling.
